What it is for

A rake is the land-clearing attachment that respects the site. Tines penetrate and pull out roots, stumps and rock while soil sifts back through the gaps, so you are not hauling away, and then buying back, the topsoil that made the lot worth clearing.

Tine spacing does the work. Close spacing collects small debris and rocks and is right for finishing a lot before seeding; wide spacing sheds dirt aggressively and moves stumps and large root balls without loading the machine with soil.

The failure point on a cheap rake is always the tine root. Ours are gusseted into a full-width backbone rather than welded to a bar, because a tine that bends in a root mat takes the mounting plate with it.

How to size it

Rake width should be close to the carrier's track or tyre width so the machine is not steering around its own attachment. On excavators the constraint is weight at reach; on skid steers it is the loader's rated operating capacity with the attachment out front. If you are both clearing and finishing, choose the closer tine spacing. You can make multiple passes with a fine rake, but you cannot make a coarse one pick up small rock.

Straight answers

Before you order

Rake or a bucket for land clearing?

A bucket picks up everything, including the topsoil you want to keep and the dirt you will pay to haul. A rake separates as it works. On any lot where the soil is staying, the rake is not merely better, it is a different economic outcome.

Will a rake pull stumps?

It will pull small to medium stumps and root balls that have already been cut and loosened, particularly with wider tine spacing. A large hardwood stump with an intact tap root wants a dedicated stump bucket or a thumb. The rake will fight it and you will bend a tine.

What tine spacing should I order?

Roughly 3 inches for finish work on residential lots where small rock matters, and 5 to 6 inches for heavy clearing where you want dirt to fall through and only the big material to ride out. Clearing contractors who do both routinely own one of each.
