Post Driver Hammers
Hydraulic post drivers for fence line, guardrail, sign post and vineyard work, driven straight from the seat.
What it is for
A hydraulic post driver turns a mini excavator or skid steer into a fencing crew. The advantage over a tractor-mounted driver is the excavator's reach and articulation: the operator sets the post plumb from the cab, on a slope, without repositioning the machine for every post.
Driving preserves the soil column around the post, which is why a driven post consistently holds better than a set post in the same ground: you are not backfilling loose material into an oversized hole. On a fence line that means fewer posts working loose after the first wet winter.
The practical limits are rock and frost. In ground with cobble the driver will deflect the post rather than drive it; break the hole first or switch to an auger and a set post.
How to size it
Match the driver to the machine's auxiliary flow and to the largest post diameter and length you actually drive. A driver sized for a 4-inch line post will not swallow an 8-inch corner post, and running a large driver on a small carrier means slow cycles and a hot circuit. Check the chuck or cap size against your post stock before you order.

Before you order
How many posts an hour is realistic?
In good ground with a well-matched carrier, a competent operator drives 40 to 60 line posts an hour including repositioning. Rocky ground, long posts and corner assemblies bring that down sharply, so quote your fencing work on ground conditions, not on the brochure number.
Will it drive steel T-posts as well as wood?
Yes, with the correct cap. Use the right adapter for the profile. Driving a T-post with a cap sized for round wood will mushroom the top and it will not take a clip properly afterwards.
Excavator-mounted or skid-steer-mounted?
Excavator-mounted, if you have the choice. The boom and stick let you set the post plumb on uneven ground and reach over an existing fence line, which is exactly the work that is slowest by hand.
