Attachment answers / Pins & couplers

Will a Bobcat X-Change attachment fit a John Deere machine?

Short answer

No. Bobcat X-Change and John Deere Wedge Lock are different coupler patterns with different jaw geometry and latch positions - an X-Change bucket will not mount to a Wedge Lock coupler. Buy the Wedge Lock version, buy pin-on, or change the machine's coupler.

This is the most common fitment question we get, and the honest answer is short. Coupler patterns are proprietary. The pickup lip, the jaw spacing, the latch pocket position and the wedge angle differ between Bobcat X-Change, John Deere Wedge Lock and Kubota Wedge Lock. An attachment cut for one pattern does not hang on another, and forcing it is how you drop a bucket.

Why manufacturers do this

Excavator couplers on mini machines grew up as OEM systems rather than as an industry standard, which is the opposite of what happened on skid steers - there, the universal quick-attach plate became a de facto standard early and stuck. On mini excavators every major manufacturer developed its own, and the patterns are close enough to look interchangeable in a photograph and far enough apart to be genuinely incompatible.

Your three options

Buy the attachment in the coupler style you have. This is nearly always the right answer. We build the same bucket in multiple coupler patterns - a 12 in. trenching bucket exists in Bobcat X-Change for 3-9 t machines, in John Deere Wedge Lock for 4-8.5 t and 2-6.3 t, and in Kubota Wedge Lock, alongside straight pin-on versions. The product is the same; the mount is what you specify.

Buy pin-on and remove the coupler. If you rarely change attachments, running pin-on removes the weight, the length and the coupler cost entirely. You are back to a 15-30 minute change.

Change the coupler on the machine. A machine can be re-fitted with a different coupler, or with a universal-style coupler that accepts more than one pattern. This is worth doing when you are standardising a mixed fleet onto one attachment inventory, and it is not worth doing for one bucket.

What about adapters

Adapter plates that convert one coupler pattern to another do exist. They work, but every adapter stacks another 2-4 in. of offset and another set of pounds onto the end of the stick, and stacks a second set of pins into the load path. On a mini excavator, where lift capacity at reach is already the binding constraint, we would rather sell you the right mount than an adapter for the wrong one.

Follow-up questions
Are John Deere Wedge Lock and Kubota Wedge Lock the same?

No, despite the shared name. They are separate patterns and we stock attachments built for each. Always specify by the machine brand as well as the words wedge lock.

Can I convert an X-Change bucket to pin-on?

In many cases the coupler bracket can be cut off and pin-on ears fabricated, but the result is a fabricated bucket with an unknown load path. For anything that will see rock or demolition work, buy the correct mount.
